Implementing new consent procedures for schools-based human papillomavirus vaccination: a qualitative study

Background The requirement for written parental consent school-based human papillomavirus vaccination programme in England can act as a barrier to uptake some young women, with the potential exacerbate health inequities. Aims To consider practicalities and implications of implementing new procedures, including telephone adolescent self-consent, two local authority areas southwest England. Methods Digitally recorded, semi-structured interviews were conducted 53 participants, immunisation nurses, school staff, people, parents. All fully transcribed thematic analysis was undertaken. Results Parental welcomed by parents, women study. Adolescent self-consent rare. Greater understanding barriers outside mainstream sessions is needed further address inequalities uptake. Conclusions procedures generally worked well but important remain.
